Medalllion Twist
Description
A medallion quilt in motion!
Putting a spin on a typically symetrical quilt design is what makes this medallion quilt unique! With overlapping and rounded corners, this quilt keeps the design in motion.
Start with a focal fabric for the large square center and use that fabric as inspiration for each color round of fabric. The cover quilt uses a variety of four fabrics for each round. For example, for Round 1 there are four green fabrics and a pink fabric. To add texture, Round 2 in this sample uses a blue Essex linen on all sides, but you can use a different fabric on each side. For the final Round 3 add another green and repeat the pink fabric. A blank sheet is included for planning colors. This is a great opportunity to use some fabrics from your stash!
This pattern is not a typical block pattern repeated in a grid. It is worked in rounds from the center outward. With a goal of using as large of pieces of fabric as possible, the triangles are not flying geese surrounded by other squares or rectangles. They are joined more like binding strips—with the fabrics placed at right angles and a seam sewn at a 45° angle. Also, the strips are cut a little longer than needed, then trimmed after being joined. This method keeps everything square and at right angles when trimmed.
Utilized in the construction methods are partial seams—but don’t let this deter you as they’re surprisingly simple! Only four Drunkard’s Path blocks are used and the enclosed templates plan for ample fabric to square them up. You’ll find two Y-seams finish the diamonds—enough to be interesting but not overwhelming. \
Step by step, you can sew this!
